A colonoscope is a long thin tube with a camera at the end. Using a colonoscope, a consultant can look inside the body and examine the rectum and large bowel. Colonoscopy is used for screening of Bowel Cancer. In addition, your consultant may carry out colonoscopy for the following reasons.

1. Change in bowel habits or bleeding

2. Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as abdominal pain or diarrhea

3. Monitoring for cancer or polyps

4. Part of wider investigations

You will need Bowel Prep (laxatives) prior to the procedure so that the doctor and view the colonclearly. Your consultant can administer medications to make you drowsy and feel more relaxed during the procedure. Sometimes it may be necessary to take a biopsy to test for cancer. Your consultant may sometimes perform a Sigmoidoscopy. This is a shorter scope to look at the rectum and some parts of the large bowel. Your consultant will advise you which investigation you will need. After the procedure, you can return home same day after a few hours. Your consultant will speak to you before you leave about the next steps in your treatment.
