UPPER GI ENDOSCOPY

Upper GI Endoscopy

A gastroscope is a long thin tube with a camera at the end. Using a gastroscope, a consultant can look inside the body and examine the food pipe and stomach. It is useful tool for the diagnosis of gastric symptoms such as

1. Indigestion that is persistent despite medications or recurrent indigestion.

2. Difficulty swallowing food or sensation of food getting stuck in the gullet.

3. Recurrent vomiting or vomiting blood

4. Abdominal pain or Chest pain

Your consultant can give you a spray to numb the throat and administer medication to make you feel drowsy to help you feel more relaxed during the procedure.

Your doctor will pass the scope and view the inside on a screen. They can also take photos of the areas of concern. Sometimes it may be necessary to take a biopsy for to exclude cancer or infections (H. Pylori). After the procedure, you can return home same day after a few hours. Your consultant will speak to you before you leave about the next steps in your treatment.
