Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)

ESWL is better to treat smaller stones in the upper urinary tract ( Kidneys and Ureter). The surgeon uses a machine to deliver shockwaves from outside the body using a probe. The shock waves break up the stone without any damage to the organs. The broken stones are then passed out when urinating.

Endoscopic Stone Treatment

The surgeon introduces a small flexible tube with a camera into the urethra. Once the stone is identified, a small wire is passed inside the scope. A laser can be used to break the stones and it is removed.

Percutaneous Lephrolithotripsy

An open procedure may be needed for larger stones or where ESWL or Endoscopic treatments have failed. The surgeon makes a small incision on the patients back and gets access to the area. The surgeon uses scope (a small flexible tube with a camera) to access the stone. The stone can be broken up or removed as a whole.
