Turp

Turp

The prostate is a gland that sits at the lower opening of the urinary bladder. An enlarged prostate (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) can give urinary symptoms such as the need to go to pass urine all the time, getting up at night time, hesitance to start the flow of urine and dribbling.

Your Urologist will carry out an examination and get some bloods to assess the prostate gland. Initially medications can be used to manage the symptoms. Where medications fail, an operation can be carried out to remove parts of the gland to allow better urine flow.

In a TURP procedure, a small flexible instrument is passed in to the urethra and this is used to shave off sections of the prostate using a small electric current. This widens the space for an easier flow of urine.

This procedure will require General Anaesthesia and you will need admission overnight.
